About Trinity
About Trinity
Trinity Lutheran Seminary is a school of theology of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). From 1978 until the ELCA came into being in 1988, Trinity was owned and operated jointly by the American Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Church in America. Trinity has been institutional evidence of the deep unity of faith, doctrine, and life that binds all Lutherans together into one confessional family. It is meant to be a concrete expression of that unity with the mission of the whole church of Jesus Christ.
Precisely because an integral part of Lutheran identity is not sectarian but ecumenical, the seminary has consciously sought to be of service to the wider Christian community. This is reflected in ecumenical representation among Trinity’s student body, faculty and staff, course offerings, and special events. As a result, Trinity Lutheran Seminary has developed the respect of congregations and even the governing bodies of other churches. It has been looked to as a theological resource for local congregations and for seminarians who find it difficult to pursue education at a seminary of their own denomination.

A theological seminary is more than an educational institution. It is also a community of Christians gathering in the name of Jesus to praise the Lord and to be empowered for mission. A seminary education involves seeking the maximum possible involvement in the various dimensions of the entire experience: academics, common meals, worship, ministry in context, community life and special programs.

Our Students Speak
“I chose Trinity because of the amazing community I could sense during my short time as a visitor. It is obvious that God is doing beautiful things on this campus and that this community is feeding all of the students.”
“I chose Trinity Lutheran Seminary because the sense of community is truly unlike any other school I have ever visited. The warm feeling of welcome is compelling and it feels like home. I also really love the aspect of the 2+2… 2 years of classes, 2 years of internship. I think learning through actually doing is such an effective way to learn and I’m excited to have the extra year of experience through the internship.”
“You know if you’re called by thinking about or trying to do something else and that does not fulfill you.”

“Discern all the details, seminary is not just for those who feel called to be a pastor or in a congregation.”

“I was first drawn to Trinity because they are on the leading edge of MDiv programs with the Spanish for ministry and 2+2 programs. The community here is what sealed the deal for me. When I visited, I could sense hob big community is here.”
“My background is not extremely academic (hence an acting degree and working at camps) so the strong emphasis placed on Contextual Education through the 2+2 model at Trinity really appealed to me. The academics here are pretty rigorous as well.”
